Who’s Who of ‘Doctor Who’: New Companion Mandip Gill

Stay on target

Freema Agyeman. Karen Gillan. Arthur Darvill. Jenna Coleman. Pearl Mackie. Mandip Gill.

Recently revealed as one in a trio of new Thirteenth Doctor companions, Gill carries the torch for those zero-to-hero Doctor Who actors who came before her.

The 20-something’s first television gig came in 2012, when she landed a main-cast part as Phoebe Jackson/McQueen on British soap opera Hollyoaks (where she shared nine episodes with future Who colleague Tosin Cole).

From homeless teenager to train crash victim to murder suspect, Phoebe had a good three-year run on the teen drama before being poisoned by the Gloved Hand Killer.

Gill followed her plum role with a guest spot on BBC sitcom Cuckoo , before appearing in a five-episode arc of Doctors (playing a pregnant homeless woman—typecast much?).

If you missed her recent walk-on performances in The Good Karma Hospital and Casualty , viewers can catch Gill in the new BBC series Love, Lies and Records (alongside the fabulous Ashley Jensen), and in 2018 drama The Flood (starring Game of Thrones ‘ Lena Headey and Iain Glen).

Or just wait until the autumn, when Jodie Whittaker steps out as the first female Doctor, accompanied by her three sidekicks: Graham (Bradley Walsh), Ryan (Cole), and Yasmin (Gill).

“This is an iconic show with an amazing fanbase and I look forward to everything that brings,” Gill said last month, no doubt bracing herself for the coming storm. “Certain roles seem unattainable and this is one of those, so much so I didn’t believe it to be true for the first few weeks.”

She’s not the only one buzzing with excitement for the new season: Gill’s alma mater University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) proudly shared the good tidings in a Halloween announcement.

“It was clear in her acting-for-screen classes that she had real potential so it’s no surprise to see she has done so well in TV,” Terence Chapman, acting lecturer at UCLan, said in a statement.

“There has been so much in the press in recent years about the lack of diversity in the industry and in actor training,” he continued. “As a young British/Asian woman from a working-class background, Mandip is a great ambassador for what we are trying to achieve here.”
